Preferred Name and Pronoun Request
The HUUSD recognizes that some students or staff choose to use a first name other than their legal first name as well as preferred pronouns in their everyday lives and in informal settings.

As long as the use of the preferred name is not for an unlawful purpose, HUUSD acknowledges that a preferred name can and should be used whenever possible throughout the school day. Therefore, HUUSD will permit any student or staff to use a preferred first name instead of their legal first name on unofficial school documents with the completion of this form.

Student Considerations

Students over 18, or under 18 with the permission of parent/guardian, can request use of a chosen name and/or gender identity.

The preferred name/gender identity will be used in many school contexts, such as class rosters, student informational systems (i.e., Powerschool), student IDs, and school Gmail accounts.

HUUSD is required to use a student’s legal name for official records such as transcripts and state standardized testing platforms; however, whenever reasonably possible, a student’s preferred name/gender identity will be used.
