Engineering Expectations Contract
As you know UTC Plymouth is a Specialist Engineering College and Engineering will be a compulsory lesson for your child from year 7 right through to year 11. This may extend to sixth form. It is crucial that you understand the level of work that your child will be doing in their first year and beyond, so you have an appreciation of Safety in the Workshop.

It is our intention that every young person who leaves UTC Plymouth will have a firm grasp of all types of engineering. They will be trained to a Level 2 standard and will be ready to walk into any Level 3 apprenticeship should they choose to leave College at 16. Our curriculum is varied, exciting and valued by our Industry Partners.

Your child will be trained how to use industry standard machinery and how to use industry standard tools and equipment. I am sure you agree this will be very exciting for the students and for you to see them develop into real engineers.

Here is an example of the types of activities your child will be learning from Year 7:
Electrical Installation - your child will learn how to wire simple electrical circuits that are used in their home.
Hand Fitting - your child will learn how to use hand tools to create products in metal.
Vehicle Technology - your child will learn how a car works and how to maintain a car, including what is involved in an MOT and a Service.
Fabrication - your child will learn how to mould plastics and polymers in industry.
Engineering Drawing - we will learn engineering drawing to an industry standard.
Machines and Equipment - throughout this year your child will use industry machines and equipment ranging from; Pedestal Drills, Centre Lathes, Milling Machines, CNC Machinery and Welding equipment amongst others.

As you will be aware there are hazards attached to using tools, equipment and machinery and we have strict safety controls in place to minimise these hazards. Our absolute focus will be ensuring that every child is completely safe and happy. Unfortunately, as in industry, accidents do happen although we do have an excellent safety history. It would be unprofessional of us to not make sure you are aware of the risks that are present in an industrial workshop.

It is to this end that we would like you to reinforce with your child the absolute importance of following instructions, maintaining an alert awareness of safety at all times and treating all equipment with the respect it deserves.  We will only allow students to access the workshop if we can trust them to follow our safety procedures and they have the correct PPE - Steel toe cap shoes and overalls. If students do not have the correct PPE they will not be allowed to take part in the workshop.

The safety of your child in our workshops is a non negotiable priority and we will do our absolute best to ensure your child returns home every day safe, well and extremely happy.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will talk through any concerns you may have.
