CPEI Youth High Performance Program - Expression of Interest Form (2024)
Please complete one form per interested athlete.

NOTE: Completion of this form does not guarantee acceptance into the Youth High Performance Program. Final acceptance will be determined by the HP Youth Development Coach in accordance with the CPEI Selection Policy.

Do you love cycling, a good challenge, and being part of a team of others who share this passion? Do you want to develop your athletic ability and experience the excitement of competing both locally and in other provinces? If so, we would like to encourage you to apply for Cycling PEI’s Youth High Performance (HP) Program this year!

Anyone between 11-23 years of age who answers “YES!” to the questions above is welcome and encouraged to apply!

NOTE: We will be holding an Identification Camp for those interested in the Youth HP Program at the West Royalty Elementary School on April 20th & 21st - see below for more details.

First, a few words about some exciting developments for CPEI’s Youth HP Program, and what participants (and parents) should expect this year:

To begin with, we’d like to welcome Sue Rodgers as our new Youth Development Coach! Sue is an NCCP-trained Competition Development Coach, has a Masters degree in Coaching, and is an educator who has dedicated her career to working with and coaching young people. She brings many years of experience and will help bring our program up to a whole new level, so we’re very excited to bring Sue on board this year along with our wonderful volunteer assistant coaches.

Here’s some basic information about what program participants can expect this year:

  • Up to three weekly sessions beginning April 30th, including:

    • Tuesday evening training sessions (to be coordinated with Rigid Riders starting in June);

    • Thursday evening technical training sessions and time trials (with guest teachers brought in regularly to share their expertise);

    • Sunday endurance rides (or participation in races).

  • Participation in off-Island races (with support for transportation and accommodation whenever needed and possible) including the Dieppe Canada Cup (July 12-14), the Kentville Canadian MTB Nationals (July 18-20), the Keppoch Enduro & XCO weekend (Aug 10-11), as well as an off-Island training camp (date TBD);

  • With the Canada Games taking place in St John’s in August 2025, HP Program participants born in the years 2005-2009 (or as early as 2003 for women) will have a chance to try out for a spot on the Team PEI MTB and/or Road Cycling Team!

This year, the annual registration fee of $350 (plus a UCI race license) will include one free race kit and free registration in all Cycling PEI-organized races (excluding Gravity Series). If cost is a barrier, we can advise on options for subsidized registration fees as we don’t want to turn away any motivated young future champion.

IDENTIFICATION CAMP DETAILS

On the 20/21st of April we will be holding an Identification Camp at West Royalty Elementary School to determine a base level of fitness.  This fitness will be used to determine ongoing training as well as the potential performance level of an athlete.

Athletes will be expected to bring:

  • The bike they plan to use most for racing;

  • An indoor trainer for on-bike testing (let us know if you need to borrow a smart trainer and we’ll hook you up);

  • Indoor shoes to complete basic fitness testing in the realm of strength, speed and explosive power.

We look forward to seeing you there!
