Wildcat Virtual Program                                     Elective Choices for 2020-2021 School Year
Students in 7th and 8th grade beginning the school year virtually in our Wildcat Virtual Program will have the option of receiving instruction either completely virtually (on-line) or hybrid (core classes on-line with the option of attending in-person for band and/or athletics).  Students who choose the hybrid option will have to provide their own transportation if it is at a time when other than when buses run before or after school.

Virtual students must have two electives.  If a student chooses the hybrid option band and/or athletics each represent one elective.

If a student returns in-person at any time of the year, they may elect to continue with their virtual electives or change to an elective that is offered in-person.

Please complete this form with your elective choices for this year.  If its a full year course, please choose it for one of your options each semester.  The descriptions for the electives are as follows:

VIRTUAL ELECTIVES

Introduction to Art (Semester Course: Wildcat Virtual Program Only)-  Covering art appreciation and the beginning of art history, this course encourages students to gain an understanding and appreciation of art in their everyday lives. Presented in an engaging format, Intro to Art provides an overview of many introductory themes: the definition of art, the cultural purpose of art, visual elements of art, terminology and principles of design, and two- and three-dimensional media and techniques. Tracing the history of art, students enrolled in the course also explore the following time periods and places: prehistoric art, art in ancient civilizations, and world art before 1400.

Foundations of Personal Wellness (Full Year Course: Wildcat Virtual Program Only)-  Exploring a combination of health and fitness concepts, this comprehensive and cohesive course explores all aspects of wellness. Offered as a two-semester course for students, coursework uses pedagogical planning to ensure that students explore fitness and physical health and encourages students to learn about the nature of social interactions and how to plan a healthy lifestyle. NOTE: This course contains content from both Healthy Living and Lifetime Fitness; to avoid duplication, students should take either those one-semester courses or this full-year course.

Healthy Living (Semester Course)-  Encouraging students to make responsible, respectful, informed, and capable decisions about topics that affect the well-being of themselves and others, this course is a one-semester course that provides students with comprehensive information they can use to develop healthy attitudes and behavior patterns. This informative and engaging course encourages students to recognize that they have the power to choose healthy behaviors to reduce risks.

Lifetime Fitness (Semester Course)-  Exploring fitness topics such as safe exercise and injury prevention, nutrition and weight management, consumer product evaluation, and stress management, this course equips students with the skills they need to achieve lifetime fitness. Throughout this one-semester course, students assess individual fitness levels according to the five components of physical fitness: cardiovascular health, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Personal fitness assessments encourage students to design a fitness program to meet their individual fitness goals.

Introduction to Spanish (Semester Course)-  Middle school students begin their introduction to Spanish with fundamental building blocks in four key areas of foreign language study: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Each unit consists of an ongoing adventure story, a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, numerous interactive games reinforcing vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, and multimedia cultural presentations covering major Spanish-speaking areas in Europe and the Americas.

Strategies for Academic Success (Semester Course)- Offering a comprehensive analysis of different types of motivation, study habits, and learning styles, this one-semester course encourages middle school students to take control of their learning by exploring varying strategies for success. Providing engaging lessons that will help students identify what works best for them individually, this one-semester course covers important study skills, such as strategies for taking high-quality notes, memorization techniques, test-taking strategies, benefits of visual aids, and reading techniques.

Career Management (Semester Course)-  Career Management is a semester-length course that assists students in their preparation for career selection. The course is designed to improve workforce skills needed in all careers including communication, leadership, teamwork, decision making, problem solving, goal setting and time management. Students complete activities that help identify personal interests, aptitudes, and learning styles. Students use results of self-assessments to determine careers that may prove personally satisfying.  Completing this semester course unlocks the ability to take a course in the career field of their interest.
Introduction to Computer Science (Full Year Course)-  This course introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. Students have creative, hands-on learning opportunities to create a computer program, develop a web page, design a mobile app, write algorithms, and collaborate with peers while building a strong foundational knowledge base. This course provides a solid foundation for more advanced study as well as practical skills they can use immediately.

Introduction to Coding (Semester Course)-  Intro to Coding covers a basic introduction to the principles of programming, including algorithms and logic. Students engage in hands-on programming tasks in the Python programming language as they write and test their own code using the approaches real programmers use in the field. Students will program with variables, functions and arguments, and lists and loops, providing a solid foundation for more advanced study as well as practical skills they can use immediately.
