The starting point for this scenario work is the four possible future states of the EU retail ecosystem in 2040, as depicted in the figure below. With 'sustainability' we refer to the environment and green solutions. With 'digitalisation' we refer to digital technologies and services as well as related skills. 'Low' refers to the stagnation of developments and 'high' to major acceleration by 2040.
