Life Course Scholars Program 2019-2020  APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 18, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
The Life Course Scholars Program is housed in the Urban Studies and Planning Program at UC San Diego. It provides an interdisciplinary, cross-generational, multi-site learning experience for UC San Diego undergraduates that will transform their understanding of aging, health, learning and research, as well as connect them more deeply to the “people and places” of surrounding San Diego communities. This unique program combines place-based, experiential, and traditional classroom-based learning methods both on and off campus.

Selected students will participate in one (evening) orientation during Fall Quarter 2019, and will be required to enroll in USP 141A (Winter Quarter 2020) and USP 141B (Spring Quarter 2020). These classes are "high work load - high reward" practicum courses, and this is reflected in the unit load: each course is worth 6 units and must be taken for a letter grade. Both quarter's classes are scheduled to meet from 9:00 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. on Wednesdays.  There are a number of off-campus activities that are part of the commitment, some during regular class hours, some outside of them.  Two weekend days, in particular, are required: one for the annual all-day LCS retreat (Sunday, January 5th, 2020) and one for a Senior Housing Tour (winter quarter date TBD).

The program is co-taught by Dr. Leslie R Lewis and Dr. Mirle Rabinowitz Bussell, faculty members in the Urban Studies and Planning Program.
