Sign-up for Byte-sized RSE Season 2 Episode 3: Introduction to EasyBuild - Simplifying HPC Software Installation
This is the sign-up form for the Byte-sized RSE session on EasyBuild. The event will be hosted online via Zoom on Tuesday 23rd January 2024, 11:00-12:30 GMT (UTC). The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants shortly before the session.

This byte-sized session will provide a high-level introduction to the software build and installation framework EasyBuild (https://easybuild.io/). EasyBuild is focused on supporting the installation of software on High Performance Computing platforms and is increasingly widely used as a tool to simplify this process. Following a short introductory presentation, there will be an opportunity to see how EasyBuild works as part of a hands-on interactive tutorial.

Session prerequisites

As a tool that is focused on High Performance Computing infrastructure, EasyBuild is intended to run in a Linux environment. To participate in the interactive element of this session, you will need to have access to a Linux system and some familiarity with using the command line.

It is strongly recommended that you use a laptop/desktop running Linux*, on which you have admin access in case it is necessary to install any dependencies. You may also be able to use a remote Linux server or HPC platform that you have access to, if that system has EasyBuild installed.

In terms of required software on your system, you will need to to have Python 3 and the pip package manager installed on your system as well as, ideally, having the lmod package installed. EasyBuild can then be installed via pip during the session.

* An alternative option that you might be able to use to participate in the session is to use Linux running within a Docker container or some other similar container or virtualisation platform, or for Windows users, to use Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). This should allow participants working in a Windows or macOS environment to participate in the session. However, given the short nature of the session, we won't be in a position to support issues with container-based or similar environments during the session.
