Gender-responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT) provides competitive support for GREAT Fellows (and in some cases current course participants) to present at conferences. People not affiliated with GREAT are NOT eligible for travel grants. Gender must be an explicit part of your abstract/presentation or panel discussion, and poster submissions are not eligible for travel grant funding. Funding can only cover expenses that GREAT can pay for directly, such as conference registration fees, flights, and hotel costs, and GREAT will not reimburse for expenses.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• How much money is available? The total pool is $5,000 USD per year, which can be awarded to any number of applicants. Typically GREAT provides between $1,000 and $2,500 per successful award. The pool of money refreshes each calendar year.

• When is the deadline? There is no deadline, per se, though in reality applications should be completed as early as possible. We review each application as it comes in, and make a funding decision based on the strength of the application, whether it meets required obligations, and based on the amount of funds we have available at that point. If our funding has run out for the year, we will not be able to fund additional awards until the beginning of the year, so applications received earlier in the year may have a better chance of receiving funding.

• How early do I need to apply? Ideally we would like applications at least two-months prior to the event, though earlier than this is better, and if need be, we can attempt to make shorter time frames work, but there are no guarantees of course.

• What types of conferences are permitted? While there are no strict parameters, the conferences should be related to agricultural research for development, and applications are reviewed to assess the potential impact that both the conference and the presentation may have.

• What types of expenses are covered? GREAT can typically only cover expenses that it can pay for directly. For example, this could include airfare, hotel stays, etc. In some cases there is more flexibility that can allow GREAT to reimburse for expenses, but this is not necessarily available in all cases.
