In 2021, the United States saw a surge of parents, activists and lawmakers arguing that some books, especially those about sexual and racial identity, do not belong in school or public libraries. Have you ever experienced book challenges or bans in your school or library? What do you think about them?
Among the most frequent targets are books by or about Black or LGBTQIA+ persons, like George M. Johnson’s “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer,” and Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye.” Is there a book or author that helped you explore your identity, heal, connect, or understand new perspectives? What would you like to say to the author about the impact of their story?
