Read "Rough Sleepers" by Tracy Kidder and/or join in the book group discussion today, January 14th, at 12 noon.

Read "Evicted" by Matthew Desmond and/or join a group discussion.

Read "Poverty, By America" by Matthew Desmond and or/join a group discussion.

Attend a cozy night supper when we discuss these or similar books, plus a children’s story and discussion.

Listen to speakers, such as Nick Coulter, head of Person-Centered Housing Options (PCHO) or Andy Carey, co-founder of MC Collaborative.

Listen to a speaker who has been homeless—a graduate of FPGROC (Family Promise) or REACH (Rochester Emergency Action Committee for the Homeless).

Select more books and documentaries for discussion

Collect and organize, on an on-going basis, a list of suggested books and articles relating to homelessness for the web site.

Attend a session on who is doing what for the homeless in Rochester.

Serve (Serving is one of the best ways to learn.)

Join in a winter clothing drive—bring in hats, scarves, mittens, coats.

Join in putting on a H.O.T. (Homeless Outreach Team) event for homeless people where they can meet with agencies who provide services. The Homeless Outreach Team is a joint effort of the Rochester Police Department along with various faith-based and other organizations that provide services for the homeless.

Visit homeless people with the Homeless Outreach Team (H.O.T.). H.O.T. meets at the downtown Rochester Police Department (30 N Clinton Ave) at 10:30 AM on Thursdays before visiting homeless areas in Rochester to provide items such as socks, bottled water, food, as well as connecting homeless people to agencies that can help.

Join in making move-in buckets of cleaning supplies for guests of FPGROC (Family Promise of Greater Rochester) moving into apartments.

Join in a Second Saturday at Family Promise headquarters (142 Webster Ave). Second Saturdays are apartment repair and clean-up sessions, starting at 1 PM. Snacks are served.

Join in assembling supply bags for panhandlers. Contents to include hygiene items, snacks, and socks, plus flyers with contact information for PCHO (Person-Centered Housing Options).

Pick up supply bags to deliver to any panhandler you meet.

Participate in fundraising activities for Family Promise, such as the spring Bowl-a-thon.

Join in making bag lunches for MC Collaborative to hand out during weekly visits to homeless areas.

Join in preparing meals for Peace Village or REACH, etc.

Knit blankets for people experiencing homelessness.

Donate to Family Promise, REACH, The Children’s Agenda

Donate to a "Housing For All" fund at church

Advocate

Join in writing postcards or letters to legislators in support of initiatives advocating for housing justice.

Support the City-Wide Tenant Union of Rochester (CWTU) in their Stabilize Rochester campaign (rental vacancy survey, no eviction without good cause, and rent stabilization).

Show up at City Council and County Legislature meetings to show support when people advocating for housing justice will be speaking.

Join a bus trip to Albany in March to advocate for legislation advancing housing justice with The Children’s Agenda and/or REACH.

Join the REACH Advocacy team (meets twice a month on Wednesdays at 4:30 PM, in person and by Zoom)

Meet with guests of REACH, get to know them, and help them prepare to advocate for themselves at City Council, County Legislature, and/or lobbying state legislators.
