We need you!

Are you able to give some of your time to the Powe community next year? We are actively recruiting diverse members of the Powe community for our 2024-25 board of directors and PTA leadership team. Everyone is welcome and we need family involvement to maintain support of our kids and staff.

What does the PTA do?

The E.K. Powe Parent Teacher Association represents a diverse community of families and dedicated teachers and staff. Our mission is to strengthen our school community by addressing the needs and well-being of students, teachers and staff, and families throughout the year.

What's the time commitment?

Great question. We understand that all caregivers have busy schedules, working in and out of the home, and we are mindful of that and try to keep it as efficient as possible:

- Board meets 1x / monthly for 1 hour. Depending on your role, you may have some follow-ups before or after the meetings.

- Committee chairs likely do not have to attend all Board meetings but should keep in touch with the President. - Some times of the year are busier than others, i.e. beginning of the year, setting the budget, getting into a rhythm, and around big school events and fundraisers

- The board will get together 1-2x over the summer to make the start of school go smoothly.

Board Governance Positions: Check any positions you are interested in

President: A role for someone who gets things done! Works with school staff, committee chairs, and the treasurer to ensure PTA funding and spending align with the needs of the school. Facilitates monthly board meetings. The primary contact between the PTA and the school and district.

Vice President: Provides support to the PTA president, plans for leadership changes, and updates job descriptions and other roles related to the systems of the PTA. Manages PTA engagement forms and connects families based on their interests.

Treasurer: Handles all banking and finances, ensures books are kept up, writes checks, and updates the budget monthly and quarterly.

Secretary: Start and circulate meeting agendas, handles minutes and other paperwork, sets meeting reminders.

Teacher and staff representatives: We would love to have more school-based folks join us on the Board! It’s a great chance to work with parents and the broader community and make sure teacher and staff voices are included.

Committee Chair Positions: Check any positions you are interested in

Communications Chair: Plans creative activities, puts together marketing collateral, cultivates our social media presence, supervises communications volunteers, generates electronic newsletter for Powe, and liaison for website. This chair works with a team.

Family Engagement Chair: Helps new members of the Powe community feel welcome through gatherings, volunteer opportunities, and events to get to know other families, teachers, and Powe leadership.

Fundraising Chair: Plans fundraising events like the annual fund drive, works with local businesses to organize support for Powe, and raises money for the PTA. This chair works with a team.

Powe Appreciation Chair: Plans various staff appreciation efforts throughout the year like breakfasts, lunches, teacher appreciation week, Crayons2Calculators volunteers, etc. Manages the sign ups, ordering, and execution for all staff meals and support activities. Coordinates with school leadership and staff point person to plan the year to ensure all activities align with the staff needs.

Volunteer Coordinator: Works closely with the Powe teacher and staff appreciation chair. This includes setting up Grade Level Support Teams that provide support to teachers during the year. The primary contact for folks interested in volunteering, including providing guidance about the DPS volunteer approval process.

Grounds and Garden Chair: Works with the Powe community to help with planting events and maintaining the grounds.
