The City of Knoxville’s Waste and Resources Management Office has been awarded the USDA Compost and Food Waste Reduction Grant, supporting the expansion of the Knoxville Compost Project! As part of the grant the City of Knoxville, CAC Beardsley Farm, and the Knox County Community Gardens and Growers Alliance are seeking applications from established community gardens with interest in a three-bin (medium capacity/ 7 cubic yards), lidded composting system. Only the seven chosen applicants will be awarded compost bins. The bins will be built on site and will be completed between September 2023 and September 2024. As part of the City’s required reporting to the USDA, chosen community gardens will be required to maintain the bins and send the City reports every 6 months following installation.

Hosts (community gardens) are required to measure and record all finished compost, and extrapolate food waste from the finished compost quantity

Hosts (community gardens) are required to send the City reports every 6 months following installation of the compost bin. Reporting will be entered in either an Excel spreadsheet or Google Sheet for consistency.

Each community garden’s members will decide if they have the capacity to accept food waste from the surrounding neighborhood OR if they prefer to limit it to those generated by the gardeners and their families

Professor Hellwinckel will build the compost bins and teach an on-site workshop for each partnering community garden as well as provide on-going support in conjunction with the UT Ag Extension Agents if questions about pests, temperatures, odors, nitrogen/carbon ratios, etc. arise

Professor Hellwinckel will also lead a second workshop at each community garden to troubleshoot, demonstrate how to screen, and demonstrate how to measure their compost output to encourage accurate reporting

Hosts (community gardens) will offer any excess compost to other community members, increasing agricultural producers' access to compost
