School Health Advisory Council (SHAC):  Nomination/Application for Board-Appointed Members:  Due by August 31, 2022 by 5:00 PM CST
Texas Education Code Sec. 28.004  outlines the role and responsibility of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).  Members of the SHAC should be mostly made up of parents who have at least one child enrolled in a FWISD school, are not employed by the school district, and have a vested interest in the health and well-being of all children and youth across the district.  The SHAC assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district's health education instruction and the school district must consider the recommendations of the local SHAC before changing the health education curriculum or instruction.
The SHAC makes numerous recommendations to the school board related to Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child Health.  Some of these recommendations include hours of instruction in health-related curriculum, coordinated school health programming, and strategies for increasing parental awareness of health behaviors and identifying resources within the district and community to support student health.  The board of trustees appoints at least five members to the SHAC.  While the majority of SHAC members are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district, board members can also appoint classroom teachers, school counselors and school administrators, district students, health care professionals, business community members, law enforcement, senior citizens, clergy members, representatives from non-profit health organizations and representatives from local domestic violence programs.
