Mercer Central Online Eligibility Criteria
Before applying to the Online Academy, the family must make sure this learning option is the right one for their child and that the student is equipped with the necessary skills to be successful in a self-guided online learning environment.
Successful online students demonstrate the following characteristics:
- Self-motivated
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to set and meet deadlines
- Perseverance
- Taking the initiative to ask for help when needed
- Ability to follow a schedule
Parent/guardian expectations for online students:
- Assist the student in creating and adhering to a schedule
- Regularly monitor progress and assignment completion within the learning platform
- Collaborating and communicate with and responding to teachers and staff members
- Establish a distraction-free workspace within the home
- Provide and ensuring reliable access to technology
Eligibility criteria:
-Students must be in grades 9-12
-Demonstrate a history of good attendance: no more than 3 unexcused absences in the previous semester
-Have passing grades for all subjects and if applicable have a 2.0 GPA for the previous semester.
-If previously enrolled in an online course, must have completed the online course successfully.
-Agree to abide by all Mercer Central/Online Academy rules and procedures including but not limited to the following:
All courses are selected from the Edgenuity platform. This will serve as the primary source of instruction.
Students will be assigned an online academy advisor who will help monitor and advise the student but will not provide direct instruction.
Online Academy students are expected to complete and submit all assignments by the due dates and progression on assignments will be monitored regularly.
If a student is not passing a class, making adequate progress, and/or is not meeting assignment deadlines, they may be put on probation, required to attend ESS, required to return to in-person learning, and/or may be removed from the Online Academy.
Student must remain enrolled for at least 1 semester.
All students are required to attend in-person for state testing and any other time the district/school determines necessary.
*Any student who does not meet the criteria above, can petition the Online Committee for consideration due to extenuating circumstances.
To apply: complete the Mercer Central School application and then the Mercer Central Online google application for each student. Applications will be reviewed by a committee and families will be notified of the final enrollment decision.
