This free summer literacy program is available for youth aged 12-18
When: Monday, June 10th through Friday, June 14th from 10 am until 5 pm and Saturday, June 15th time TBD. Extended time and transportation is available by request to accommodate family schedules.
Where:
Bethsaida Baptist Church
853 4th St, Stone Mountain, GA 30083
Who: Any youth aged
12-18. Why: Stone Mountain, the largest Confederate monument in the world is frequently in the news. Shermantown, a historic African American community that stands in the shadow of Stone Mountain Park and played an instrumental role in the Park's history is rarely mentioned in official histories. In this program, youth will become co-researchers alongside returning youth researchers, historians, and university professors to record the history of Shermantown, Georgia and its relationship to Stone Mountain. That also means figuring out how to share this information: maybe by filming a documentary? Recording a podcast? Offering guided community tours?
Funded by the Southern Poverty Law Center, this program is free for all participants and will provide snacks and public transportation. It includes field trips to Stone Mountain Park, Shermantown, and local archives.
