The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the Coordinated School Health model. The council will address topics related to health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, social and emotional climate, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion and family/community involvement.

Texas Education Code Sec. 28.004 outlines the role and responsibility of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). A majority of members of the SHAC should be made up of parents who have a student enrolled in the district, are not employed by the school district, and have a vested interest in the health and well-being of all children across the district. The school district must consider the recommendations of the local SHAC before changing the health education curriculum or instruction. The SHAC makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees related to Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child Health.

The board shall appoint at least 5 members to the SHAC. While the majority of SHAC members are parents of students enrolled in the district and are not employed by the district, board members can also appoint classroom teachers, school counselors, school administrators, district students, health care professionals, business community members, law enforcement, representatives from non-profit health organizations, and representatives from local domestic violence programs.

Member Requirements:

Parents MUST have a currently enrolled student in GISD.
Members will commit to meet four times during the 2025-2026 school year.
Committee meetings are approximately 1.5 hours in length from 12:00-1:30 p.m.
The SHAC will meet for the 2025-2026 school year on the following dates:
September 10, 2025, November 12, 2025, February 11, 2026, and April 8, 2026.

SHAC Applications and Board appointments are due by June 26, 2025, 5:00 p.m. CST.
