Giving Gardens of Indiana is seeking an enthusiastic assistant teacher for our educational programing. The main goal of this position is to foster and facilitate the intellectual and social development of children in an outdoor environment on the farm and in the forest. Skills required:1) Observing and assessing class interests 2) Assisting in planning & implementing lessons and activities that enrich and extend current interests 3) Creatively documenting student skills to showcase the progress of the students.  The assistant teacher will work with the Lead Teacher and Educational Director to create an optimal learning environment for the students.
Assistant Teacher Responsibilities
-Assisting the teaching team and director to develop preschool framework (curriculum)
-Understanding and implementing Indiana State standards for preschool if applicable
-Using a variety of activities and instructional methods (songs, stories, art, activities, etc.) to  motivate and stimulate children’s abilities
-Meeting the emotional, social, and physical needs of each child
-Maintaining daily open communication with parents and participating in parent teacher conferences
-Writing and distributing accident and incident reports
-Maintaining a daily narrative learning log and behavioral record for the students
-Working with the teaching team to write a monthly report of activities and learning experiences for the monthly Giving Gardens of Indiana newsletter
-Overseeing daily site assessment of the outdoor site(s) before each session, making sure all hazards are properly assessed and amended to provide a safe environment for children
-Providing activities and teaching materials each day that extend student-directed learning according to the students’ interest.
-Working with the Giving Gardens team to plan outdoor site enhancements

Assistant Teacher Expectations
-Attendance at Wild Willow Nature Preschool staff meetings when possible
-Willingness to be observed by teacher trainees on a regular basis
-Demonstrate loyalty and commitment to Giving Gardens of Indiana and all staff members as a positive team player

Desired Skills & Abilities
-Ability and desire to create a play-based and child-centered emergent learning environment inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia pedagogies.
-Deep appreciation for and connection to nature, gardening and/or naturalist experience is a plus
-Experience and/or desire to work with early childhood / preschool age children
-Patience, kindness and understanding of all children and their backgrounds and life experience  
-Highly relational and effective collaborator and communicator
-Physical ability to spend extended periods of time in the outdoors, with hiking and  moderate physical activities. Teachers must be able to remain outside during school sessions in inclement weather
-Must be CPR & First Aid Certified (this must be obtained at teachers own cost)
-Must get a background check
-Must be able to supply self and wear appropriate clothing and gear for all weather
