Foremost, you do NOT have to be Filipin@ to join! We welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about health in the Filipin@ American community!

Time commitment: Be involved as much as you'd like! We understand you are a student first, so we hope we can provide a space for you to take a break from studying!

Filipin@s are the 2nd largest Asian immigrant group in the US. Virginia is one of the top 10 states with the highest population of Filipin@s.

FAM is being founded with the goals of:

- spreading awareness about and address health disparities in the Hampton Roads Filipin@ American community through meeting discussions & community outreach: Norfolk and Virginia Beach are notable for being the homes for large Filipin@ populations. According to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), Filipino Americans face higher rates of hypertension and obesity compared with other Asian American subgroups and Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW)

- mentoring underrepresented pre-med students, with a special focus on Filipin@ pre-meds, to fulfill the need for Filipin@ physicians for the Fil-Am community.

- providing networking opportunities with other medical students, residencies, and other health professionals

- researching the health needs of the Hampton Roads Fil-Am community
