Join the Friends of Lake Wingra Board!

Who We Are

Our mission is to promote a healthy Lake Wingra through an active watershed community. Our mission, vision, and goals reflect our belief that sustaining the balance of a healthy lake ecosystem requires the participation and collaboration of many citizens, agencies and organizations. Therefore, we focus on diverse partners that capture watershed residents, businesses, interest groups, schools and the government.

2023 Board Recruitment

We aim to build a full 15-person board this year that is representative of our diverse urban watershed. In doing so, our goal is to embrace the organization’s long-standing scientific integrity, collaboration, and passion for Lake Wingra.

We recognize there are gaps in our current board’s capacity and expertise. As we grow, we hope to expand the organization’s diversity, historic and traditional knowledge, community connections, and skillset.

Areas of Opportunity

Based on the organization’s current board and priorities, key areas of expertise for new board members include:

  • Interest in engaging the community and love for the watershed
  • Fundraising
  • Financial planning and bookkeeping
  • Policy and/or advocacy
  • Non-profit law
  • Art
  • Historical and traditional knowledge

To ensure our growing board is representative of the watershed’s diverse community, ideal candidates are watershed residents or have direct ties to the watershed, like small business owners and/or employees locally.

Board Commitment & Expectations

We are a small, volunteer-led organization and our capacity is determined by the level of  activity and commitment of our Board Members. At this time, the expectation is for new members to serve a 2-year term.

For more details on expectations of board members, please review our Board of Directors Commitment Letter.

How to Apply

If you or someone you know is interested in our work and fits any of the qualities described above, please submit the brief interest form here.

Timeline for Growth

We plan to review the first round of applications, meet prospective board members, and begin the voting process by the end of May.
