The History Corner is a series of events exploring the history of Eldoret town and looks at Eldoret’s colonial and post-colonial past and how that has defined the town. In the lead up to Eldoret being named a city, this series looks at how the town’s cultural, economic and social shifts in the past have defined its current make-up. Looking through the lens of British colonialism and the helms of post-colonial Kenya, we hope to collect and gather materials, both oral and physical, that add evidence in our collective remembering of Eldoret.
This series will feature panel discussions, roundtable sessions, film screenings, story gathering and a mural that captures the city’s history. We are looking to document the history in written articles, voice recordings or visual stories.
Program of Activities
23rd February - Fireside Chat/ Launch of History Corner: The event is introduction to our History Corner series and a film screening of Al Jazeera’s documentary “A Very British Way of Torture.”
23rd March - Roundtable Discussion: a deep dive on the town’s past and how this has changed over the years or has not changed. This will also be a session/invitation for us to hear from Eldoret residents who have seen the town’s transformation to share the stories and memories.
20th April - Unveiling of Mural: This session will feature the unveiling of a mural documenting Eldoret’s past featuring items collated from the public and the series. Think old city maps, old family photos, letters and interesting/famed moments about the city.
