New Volunteer Application 2023-24
Thank you so much for expressing your interest in becoming a Reach Mentor. We simply couldn’t do what we do without the work and support of our volunteers.

Please read the description below explaining what is required of a mentor and fill in the application if you feel this is something you would like to pursue.

YOUR ROLE AT REACH MENTORING?

Reach Mentoring is a Christian charity that partners with schools to mentor young people facing difficult life circumstances. Our mentors are compelled by the love of Christ to support young people to reach their full potential - for this reason it is essential our mentors have an active Christian faith. This helps to foster positive, informing and empowering mentoring relationships.

The role of the mentor is to:
1.  Encourage young people to explore healthy lifestyle choices
2.  Support the educational experience of young people
3.  Care pastorally for young people
4.  Enthuse young people to play a positive role in their community

WHO DO REACH MENTORING WORK WITH?

Support is given to young people who are at risk of educational exclusion due to behavioural issues and those facing emotional distress such as family bereavement, low self-worth and confidence, anxiety, etc.
It is important to note that the majority of mentoring sessions happen within the school timetable (9am-3:30pm), so mentors would need to be available within these hours.

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM ME AS A MENTOR?

As a mentor you will be expected to commit at least one hour per week during school term time. As a Christian charity there is an expectation that you will pray for the young person that you mentor. After each mentoring session you will complete a weekly feedback form and will work with your mentoring co-ordinator to develop a plan to best support the young person. You also commit to reporting any safeguarding concerns that you have in line with the organisation's policy.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

Reach will provide training in mentoring and safeguarding before you begin your journey. Within each session there is always a Reach staff member available for support and we are available to you to answer any of your questions or concerns.  Throughout this journey we will be here to support you, as you support the young person. If you require specific information on certain issues we are here to help you and provide any necessary resources.

As mentoring is a one-to-one conversation, it is important that you can demonstrate the interpersonal and relational skills required for this. Experience of interacting and encouraging young people is not essential, but extremely beneficial. Mentoring is about creating a safe, non-judgemental space where young people can be listened to.

GENERAL

By volunteering you are agreeing maintain the high standards of personal accountability to ensure the ongoing confidence of the public in Reach Mentoring. After your application is received you will then be contacted for an informal interview. If successful, you will need to complete an Access NI Disclosure check. This will be processed through Access NI. A copy of the Access NI Code of Practice is available on request.
