A backstroke heat is started with one swimmer having curled his toes over the gutter prior to the start. The starter did not notice but the stroke judge did. The swimmer had stopped moving and was in a set position at the start yet clearly gained an advantage.  Should the swimmer be DQ’d? *

You are a handed a DQ slip from the previous heat for the swimmer in lane 3.  The slip is signed by the judge with jurisdiction over lanes 4,5,6.  What should be your action? *

A swimmer in the 200 Freestyle Relay swims 15 yards, loses his goggles and then swims back to the start end. The relay continues without anyone noticing the infraction except the stroke & turn judge who does not raise his hand as the swimmer was not in his jurisdiction. A few heats later an embarrassed coach approaches the starter/ref, explains what happened and asks the starter/ref to disqualify the relay. Should the relay be disqualified? *

In a 200 yard freestyle event, a swimmer asks the starter/ref if he can swim the backstroke. The starter/ref replies that he can but the time can only be used as a freestyle time. At the long whistle the swimmer enters the water to do a backstroke start. Is this legal? *

In the only heat of the 100 freestyle, the swimmer in lane 3 does not step up after your long whistle and invitation for the swimmers to step up.  You do not see the swimmer behind the block so you give the “take your mark” command.  As you start the heat, the lane 3 swimmer runs up to the block and dives in just behind the other swimmers.  What is your action? *

In the 100 butterfly, the swimmers assume a stationary position at the start. The starter starts the race. The swimmer in lane 2 slips on the block pushing off and “flops” into the pool a body length behind the field. Should the starter have recalled the race? *

In the 200 yard medley relay the backstroker for the team in Lane 3 got into the water and had a legal start and swim. There was a legal exchange between the backstroker and the second swimmer. The second swimmer swam butterfly and continued until she had a legal touch which finished the second leg of the relay. The third swimmer swam breaststroke and the anchor swam freestyle. Was this legal?  If not, who has the responsibility to make a DQ call? *

During the 200 medley relay, the breaststroke swimmer doesn’t get out of the pool before it is time for the freestyle swimmer to make the final exchange with the butterfly swimmer. The team is DQ’d because the breaststroke swimmer didn’t get out of the pool in time. Was this a valid DQ? *
