In association with the Poly Asian American Families Affinity Group, the GIP is proud to present the first in a series on Asian American History and Identity.  Poly parent Susie Woo, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of American Studies at California State University, Fullerton, and author of Framed by War:  Korean Children and Women at the Crossroads of U.S. Empire.  She will provide the Poly community an introduction to the history of Asian American immigration to the United States starting in the mid-19th century, with the building of the railroads, to the Chinese Exclusion Act, to the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act, which ended racial quotas on immigration from Asia.  After Dr. Woo’s presentation, Poly parents Syma Iqbal, M.D., Mark Yen, M.D., and Carol Huang, will discuss their own family’s immigration story and their identities as Asian Americans.  Following this year’s GIP theme of Empathy into Action, the presentation will help us understand how United States laws and historical events have helped shape Asian American immigration to the United States, and highlight the diversity of Asian American communities.
