Junior Level-Phonics-Wug Phonics Star

Information: Small group tutoring sessions (3-4 children)

Dates: Thursday and Friday, 22nd June-25th Aug for 10 weeks

TIme: 4:45-5:15 pm

Where: Lessons are taught online via Zoom

In this phase, your child will:

  •  learn to hear sounds correctly, including voiced and voiceless sounds like voiced th in this and voiceless th in think
  • learn to recognize, read and write adjacent consonants like the -nt in tent: this is a vital step that often gets skipped
  • link the letter(s) to the sound, and the sound to the letter(s), importantly when a single sound is more than one letter, like sh in ship and ch in chip  
  • form letters (handwriting)
  • learn the alternative letter combinations (separately) for the same sound, like ay in play, ai in rain and a_e in came.
  • learn that the same letters can represent a different sound, like the ow in snow and ow in cow
  • have fun with different kinds of activities to reinforce all the skills they learn
This is the junior level for the Jigsaw Phonics programme and is for children who have successfully completed the Puzzle phase and are secure in their single letter correspondences. 
Children in this group will continue their phonemic awareness and learn adjacent concenants and two letter graphemes. They will be able to read CVCC and CVCCC words. Once they have secured reading in this phase, they can move on to the next level. Your child will receive a certificate for participation and a monthly progress report.
