2024 Mount Philo Up & Down!

Sunday, Jan. 21st from 1-3pm is the annual Mount Philo Up & Down! This year, we are inviting both Youth (14-18) and Young Adults (18-35) to attend (in the past, this has been a Yuuth Group tradition). We hope that this gives more people in our congregation to enjoy this fun tradition.

The Mount Philo Up and Down is an annual event in which we hike up Mount Philo and sled (or hike) down! We'll meet at 1 p.m. at Mount Philo (or earlier for those carpooling from the UU Society—please let me know if you have extra room in your car to carpool or if you need a ride).

Wear warm winter clothes! Bring sleds, if you want them! Bring hot beverages in thermoses! Pray for more snow! If there isn't snow, this will just be a fun winter hike to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and the company of each other.

These activities could result in injury, so thank you for taking care of yourselves and honoring your limits. It will be cold, so dress for success out there (success being the need remove layers, not regretting not having them). Not dressing warmly enough could lead to significant discomfort. This year, we’re inviting both youth (ages 14-18) and young adults (18-35) to join us for this fun event.

Youth are required to bring permission slips, which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bD8yqt64uCadcm_6yz9MYVffwLmH-uIgfRPVzUPND0A/edit?usp=sharing.

If you have concerns, please be in touch with Rowan Van Ness at rowan@uusociety.org. We’re excited for this annual adventure.

What to bring:

  • Layers! Dress for the cold. It's predicted to be in the teens. (Here are some tips. Please wear several layers, wear synthetic materials and wool instead of cotton, and make sure you have a hat, scarf/neck warmer, mitten/gloves, and warm socks.)

  • Backpack for shedding layers if you get hot while hiking up the road. You want to avoid sweating to prevent hypothermia.

  • Sled, if you have one.

  • Poles (for going up) if you want.

  • Helmet if you want one

  • Water (put warm water in your water bottle so it doesn't freeze)

  • Thermos with hot drink. (Rowan is planning to bring a carafe of hot water and hot chocolate as well!)
