Dear Parents/Guardians

We are asking all students and whanau to sign our Players’ Sports Code of Conduct. This code of conduct is guided by and reflects our school values and the Language of Learning, particularly Be Respectful. The code outlines what this looks like in a sporting environment.

We will all agree that sporting environments must be places where we show respect for ourselves and others. Sport also provides the context for our children to develop resilience and collaboration, and is a great opportunity for children to be a contributor (particularly in team sports).

We expect students to uphold our values during class, team or whole school sporting activities, as well as representative sporting occasions such as MPSSA, CCSA, AIMS Games and when playing extra curricular sports linked to our school. We will also be referring to the code when students are playing sport at lunchtime with friends, If students know and can independently uphold the code, it will give them more strategies to work through disagreements that can arise during informal games when an adult isn’t refereeing.

Like with our chromebook and cyber safety agreements, this is an opportunity to discuss with your child our school’s expectations. We are asking students to sign the Players’ Code of Conduct, and a parent to sign the Families’/Spectators’ Code of Conduct, to show they have read and have an understanding of our school’s expectations, and agree to uphold them.

Parents, teachers and other adults who take on coaching and/or managing roles will be asked to sign the Coaches’ Code of Conduct.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT: Reremoana School is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of students while playing sport at school and beyond. We believe that it is important that all players/athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, parents and spectators associated with the school and any sports team should, at all times, show respect and understanding for the safety and welfare of others. Therefore, all those associated with Reremoana School are to comply with our Sport Code of Conduct and demonstrate our school values and expectations. *

I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I HAVE READ THE FOLLOWING STUDENT SPORTS CODE OF CONDUCT AND WILL FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES - Please tick each one as you read it.

Respect the rules - know them and play by them.

Respect the officials. If you disagree, rather than argue, have your captain, coach or manager calmly approach the umpire during a break or after the game in an appropriate manner.

Use kind words. It is not OK to speak unkindly or rudely to officials or other players, or to provoke opponents.

Work collaboratively, for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit, so will you.

Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Be kind, give compliments, give space to others.

Be a good sport. Acknowledge all good players whether they are from your team or the other team. Everyone wins and loses at some time. Display humility in victory and graciousness in defeat.

Be safety conscious for yourself and others at all times.

Cooperate with your coach, teammates and opponents. Thank your coach, manager, officials, opposition and supporters

Your involvement in the sport should be fun and enjoyable, even when competitive. Play for yourself and in doing so you will make parents and coaches proud.

Although we play to have fun, we also play to win. Find a balance between winning and having fun.

Be resilient if things don’t go your way

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Always give your best during training sessions.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants and fellow spectators regardless of gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Be a positive role model. Demonstrate a high degree of individual responsibility especially when dealing with or in the vicinity of persons under 18 years of age, as your words and actions are an example

Although we teach our students/players to strive to win when playing sports, we also recognise that they play for enjoyment. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. If not perhaps explore other avenues they may enjoy more

We strive for success when we play sports. Accept the outcome graciously, win or lose.

Help your child to recognise good performance, not just results. Applaud good play by all teams.

Encourage your child to learn the rules and play within them.

Always be positive. Only give positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort.

Accept decisions of all umpires and coaches as being fair and called to the best of their ability. If you disagree, avoid doing so publically. If you have questions or concerns contact the manager and coach to discuss (away from the game).

Use appropriate language with players, coaches, officials and other spectators. Verbal and physical abuse has no place in sporting activities

Assist when asked by a coach, manager or official.

Show your appreciation to people who volunteer their time so your child can play.
