Governing Artificial Intelligence: Conversation and Q&A with Cullen O’Keefe, Research Scientist at OpenAI

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform the way we live and work. But it’s not obvious that the transformations it brings will be good news for everyone—or even for humanity as a whole.
OpenAI, one of the leading labs working on developing AI systems, has a stated
mission “to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.” To help achieve that mission, it invests in
aligning AI systems with human intent to build systems that are “helpful, truthful, and safe.”
Easier said than done. People have already
tried to misuse AI systems in ways that could cause harm, leading companies like OpenAI to implement moderation and other safety measures. Aligning more powerful systems might be much harder. That’s one reason that OpenAI is investing in research into a range of governance strategies today.
