Undergraduate Research Opportunity with Dr. Devon A. Orme's research group, Department of Earth Science
Description: I am looking for six motivated undergraduate students to join a two-year research project focused on understanding the geologic history of the western United States. This NSF funded research seeks to understand to origin of a sedimentary basin termed a forearc basin, which forms oceanward of volcanic arcs during oceanic subduction beneath a continent or island arc system. The students will participate in research design, field and laboratory work and present their findings at departmental and national conferences. Field and analytical techniques applied will include field mapping and sedimentology, sandstone petrography, biostratigraphy, geochronology, paleomagnetism and low-temperature thermochronology. No prior experience with these methodologies is required. Students will work in pairs and focus on one of the aforementioned techniques, collect their own samples, acquire and interpret data, and disseminate their results. Students will also participate as leaders in a STEM workshop. If you are interested in gaining undergraduate research experience in the field of Earth Science, please fill out the questionnaire below. This opportunity is ideal for sophomores or juniors based on course-work history and the duration of the project.
