Death on Gokumon by Sieshi Yokomizo: A Japanese Golden Age whodunit homage to Christie from the 1940s, in a new translation!
"A fiendish, classic locked room murder mystery, from one of Japan's greatest crime writersLoosely inspired by Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, the brilliant Gokumon Island is perhaps the most highly regarded of all the great Seishi Yokomizo's classic Japanese mysteries."
I think this sounds fun, and it would be a good way to explore the literary antecedents of The Decagon House Murder (our last book). Apparently, this is a classic, and this new translation was just released!
The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont: a more literary mystery about the 11-day disappearance of Agatha Christie
Why would the world's most famous mystery writer disappear for eleven days? What makes a woman desperate enough to destroy another woman's marriage? How deeply can a person crave revenge?
I love all things Agatha Christie, but this might be a little less mystery-ish and a little more literary. Nevertheless, I've read a few chapters and it's very good! Although there is a mystery, it doesn't seem to be a typical whodunit.
Chapter and Curse by Elizabeth Penney: a cozy mystery set in a bookshop. Nominated for the Mary Higgins Clark Award at the 2022 MWA Awards.
In Elizabeth Penney's Chapter and Curse, Molly Kimball is used to cracking open books . . . but when a poetry reading ends in murder she must use her skills to crack the case.
I love a cozy, and this is the first in a new series! I love a book about books, and I think this would be a fun light read, set in a quaint British town! It's been nominated for the Mary Higgins Clark Award, and it seems really promising!
Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie!
"This story is a classic locked room mystery, a technique at which Agatha Christie excelled. One of the twelve people aboard a flight from London to Paris must have murdered [redacted for spoilers], whose past appears to be filled with those who might seek revenge."
I love Agatha, and this is apparently a pretty great one that I have yet to read. (Nina de Gramont mentions it in the acknowledgements of The Christie Affair.) Is anybody else interested?
