amanda_lieser@rdale.orgWhat is AVID? AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. In middle school, AVID targets academically promising students (GPA of 2.0-4.0) and prepares and supports them for rigorous coursework. Once in high school, through the support of the AVID elective class. AVID students are then placed in advanced classes in preparation for college. The AVID Elective class focuses on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and college/career/motivational activities. Students are expected to keep an organized binder and take notes in every class every day of the week. Tutors are in the AVID class twice per week.
AVID levels the playing field for students without a college-going tradition in their families and/or students who are underrepresented on four-year college campuses. AVID is designed to increase overall academic performance, success in rigorous curriculum, and participation in activities at school. AVID helps students become better educated, responsible citizens, and leaders in society.
Students apply to be in the AVID Elective course. The typical AVID student has average test scores, a GPA of 2.0 or higher, demonstrates a willingness to work hard, exhibits desire and determination, and shows positive behavior in all parts of the school day. The application process includes a short written response, teacher recommendation and interview. If your student has the desire and determination and would like to apply for the AVID, please encourage them to do so.
