Dear student,

Welcome to year one of the UCD School of Education Professional Master of Education (PME) programme. We wish you well on the programme and hope that you find the coming two years both fruitful and enriching. To ensure that you fully understand the requirements and demands of the course and where you can find important supports and information, we have prepared this checklist for your perusal.

You are required to read this document carefully, insert an electronic signature and submit this form on or before 11th of September 2023 at 5 p.m.

The PME is a full-time, rigorous, professional programme which awards me with a teaching qualification. Both the School of Education and the Teaching Council require that students attend all lectures. Absences from any lectures must be explained to relevant lecturers/tutors as a matter of courtesy and professionalism, and if necessary, accompanied by documentation from a doctor or other medical professional. Attendance is monitored and students who miss lectures will be asked to meet with the Directors of the programme to discuss their commitment to the course. Regular non-attendance, as defined by the course Directors, may put your final accreditation in jeopardy.

If I undertake part-time employment or any additional work, it cannot be at the expense of engagement with the school placement and university aspects of the programm

The PME calendar is in line with the UCD calendar. The academic year begins on September 4th 2023 commencing with mandatory induction.

While my school placement module is aligned with the UCD academic year, my school may require me to commence my placement at the end of August and to be available until the end of the school year. It is important therefore that I establish the school's expectations prior to accepting my placement and if I make a commitment, I will honor it to the best of my ability

I am aware that I cannot take up my place on the PME programme without a suitable school placement. I must be proactive in securing this placement and am aware of the support offered by UCD.

I am aware that the CEIM standards require a diversity of school placement settings over the duration of the programme.

I am required to have my Garda Vetting (managed by UCD registry) in place before I begin my school placement. My school may also require me to be Garda vetted. Even if the school does organise Garda vetting for me, I am still required to complete UCD Garda vetting.

Placement schools must be no further than 100 kilometers from UCD. It is my responsibility to ensure that the distance between UCD and my placement school does not impact negatively on attendance and punctuality. It is critical that the location of my placement school, as well as my school timetable, allows me to attend college for mandatory lectures as outlined on the PME timetable (available in August).

I am required to teach a minimum of four and a half hours and a maximum of eight hours each week during my school placement. At least one of my classes must be in my second subject. It is important not to over rely on TY classes for my school placement.

I am free to be timetabled by my schools on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings as well as all day on Fridays. I must be available for college lectures/tutorials on Monday (all students), Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings from 2 p.m. (depending on subjects) as well as all day on Thursday commencing at 9 a.m. (all students

N.B. Evidence of planning, in the form of a Lesson Plan, must be provided to your Tutor/Supervisor before your supervision. Failure to do so may significantly impact upon your final placement grade. Lesson plans must also be uploaded to an online folder every week as required.

It is my responsibility to request opportunities for observation and team-teaching (in my own and other subjects), especially in the first four weeks of placement but throughout the year also if possible.

It is my responsibility to clarify all expectations that the placement school has of me prior to agreeing to accept the school placement.

If I am referred to the Supplementary Teaching Support Programme (STSP) by my tutor and/or supervisor, it is mandatory and therefore I must attend. The STSP is an additional module to support students on school placement.

If I am experiencing any difficulties with my placement or my course work, it is my responsibility to communicate with the relevant personnel on the PME programme.

If I have any queries regarding Teaching Council recognition of my subjects I should consult www.ucd.ie/education/pme/faqs/. I understand that undertaking a methodology in a particular subject specialism does not automatically mean I am recognised by the Teaching Council to subsequently teach that subject and that recognition and registration issues are the remit of the Teaching Council.
