Who We Are
We are a nonprofit fair trade retail organization made up of retail stores across the U.S and Canada. We carry unique handmade home decor, art, jewelry, personal accessories & global treasures. Our mission is to create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term fair trading relationships. We invest in dignity, sustainability, education and hope for our artisan partners around the world. Our vision is that one day all artisans will earn a fair wage, be treated with dignity and respect and be able to live a life of quality. We have been partnering with artisans in developing countries by selling their handcrafted items since 1946. 2021 marks our 75 year anniversary as an organization and the 15 year anniversary for our Pasadena store!

The success of Ten Thousand Villages largely depends on the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers. Volunteers are crucial to our mission and operation. As fair trade ambassadors, volunteers help to amplify our message by sharing our mission in the store and throughout the community. Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena depends on volunteers to help the manager and assistant manager with the daily operation of the store. Each volunteer brings their own unique sets of skills, strengths and insights to the operation of the store. Because of volunteers, we are able to focus on our mission and continue investing in our artisan partners, which is more important than ever now. This is a rewarding and fulfilling volunteer experience because you will be making a difference in the lives of more than 20,000 artisans and their families and educating people on my fair trade is the way of the future. Together we thrive!
What Is Expected of You As A Volunteer
- Volunteers are essentially fair trade ambassadors and sales associates so we will train you to perform these duties. As a fair trade ambassador your main priority is connecting with people by sharing our mission and why fair trade is so important in our economy.
- You will greet customers by welcoming them into the store, assisting them with their shopping, telling them the stories behind the products, and sharing about fair trade.
- You will be asked to restock inventory, straighten or rearrange displays, assist with inventory counts, and maintain a clean and welcoming environment in the store.
- There are also some opportunities behind the scenes such as unpacking shipments, cleaning, taking out the trash, assisting with marketing, and more.
- Volunteers are asked to commit to working a minimum of 6 hours a month (two three-hour shifts per month).
