Research has shown that 40% of counselors have
experienced some aspect of burnout, which can negatively impact their
wellbeing, the quality of services offered to the client, and can eventually
cause counselors to leave the field (O’Connor et al., 2018). However, Beks and
Doucet (2020) and other researchers suggest that supervision is a useful avenue
to mitigate counselor burnout because counselor supervisors are required to
facilitate the multidimensional development of supervisees. This presentation will
describe specific supervision strategies that can be used to identify, address,
and prevent burnout. Along with a discussion of the ethical considerations
around burnout and supervision, this interactive session will provide attendees
with practical recommendations that supervisors can utilize and implement
within their supervisory style and process.
