Everything Happens for a Reason: and other lies I’ve loved
Kate Bowler grew up in the Canadian prairies, in the community and love of a Mennonite family. A professor at Duke Divinity school, an expert in religious history and culture, she was drawn to research the American prosperity gospel, a creed that believes God is the source of endless possibilities, and if things are going wrong, it is because we are not praying in faith. Happily married to her high school sweetheart; they are grateful parents of a little boy who is the love of their lives. Then, out of the blue, Kate is diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer at the age of thirty-five.
What does it mean to die, she wonders, in a society that insists everything happens for a reason? Raw and funny, terrifying and wise, her chronicle ushers us into her community of family and friends, colleagues and healers, and honest-to-goodness believers who behave very differently to her stunning news. As she conducts us into the meaning-making prompted by her ordeal Bowler pairs faith down to the essentials. This is a Lenten book, as much as an Easter book.
Join us, as we gather for this book study which promises to be an honest examination of our faith as well as a deep blessing.
