Homework Help Project Officer Application Form
Deadline: 4th of April, 2022
WHAT?
In the Homework Help Project, Istanbul&I volunteers help kids aged 6-14 from mostly refugee backgrounds to do and understand their homework. In creative ways, they not only help the kids understand the task at hand but also may assist them by furthering their Turkish language skills in the 1-on-1 online sessions that are usually 30-55 minutes each. The objective of this project is not to “do their homework for them”, but to guide them while they do it themselves and to also build a connection while working with them (instead of for them). The overall goal of the project is to help lead the kids in the project to academic success in Turkey.
WHEN & WHERE?
Every Wednesday from 5 PM to 7 PM - This project will take place online on Zoom. The project usually ends during the summer break, but we are planning to offer a different service during these times, such as a summer camp. You are more than welcome to bring in your creative ideas.
WHO? or: What do you do as a Project Officer?
We need a team of committed and creative people that are excited about this project and will help us extend and ameliorate it so that the kids can benefit as much as possible. We are looking for 2 additional project officers to our team of 3.
As a project officer, you assist the project manager with any task that comes up in the planning and conducting of the sessions. We prioritize candidates that speak Turkish and/or Arabic on a very advanced or native level as well as candidates that have experience in working with Community Centers such as our partner organizations Qnushyo or Yusra Community Center.
Weekly Hours: 4 hours
Monthly Hours: 10-16 hours maximum
Tasks:
- Conducting the online sessions (i.a. opening the Zoom session, dividing the kids into breakout rooms, hopping in and out of breakout rooms to see whether everything is going well, making sure that volunteers are back in the main session in time for the next kid, etc.);
- Creating the session plan and matching volunteers and tutors;
- Helping to recruit new volunteers and evaluate their applications;
- Overseeing the Telegram and WhatsApp groups and answering questions there;
- Bringing in ideas for the further development and evaluation of the project;
- Helping with translation related issues (Turkish or Arabic);
- Creating and developing Excel files to keep track of the project;
- Assisting with the conducting and evaluation of a beneficiary survey;
- (If you're a Turkish native speaker) occasionally helping out with volunteering when there is a shortage of volunteers.
Please note that we work as a team and you will not be left alone with any of these tasks unless you feel comfortable doing so.
NOTE: We will conduct a short interview before accepting any possible candidates. Volunteers will also be expected to follow Istanbul&I's guidelines which includes joining a mandatory orientation.
