Call for Artists • The Umbrella Project • 2020
The Umbrella Project embraces the rainy season of Eugene by activating Downtown Eugene through an ongoing and playful appearance of umbrellas created by local artists.

The Umbrella Project is part of the Downtown Happenings Program, produced by ArtCity Eugene and sponsored by City of Eugene Cultural Services. The Downtown Happenings Program uses creative cultural activations of public space in the downtown core with artists from a variety of disciplines — with the intention to stimulate a sense of fun and whimsy, create an expectation for the unexpected, facilitate interpersonal connections among artists and community members, and contribute to a sense of place. Ideally, these programmed encounters foster a culture that catalyzes other authentic and spontaneous creative expressions to take place organically.

The Downtown Happenings Program supports City of Eugene's larger initiative to revitalize downtown through improvements of infrastructure, public safety, social services, and events. The program furthers the City of Eugene Cultural Services' mission of providing responsible and catalytic leadership that supports the public's vision for a thriving arts and culture sector which, in turn, contributes to the community's social and economic well-being.
