Tuesday, March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (virtual)Empowerment evaluation (EE) was introduced to the field by Dr. David Fetterman during his 1993 presidential address at the American Evaluation Association. It is a stakeholder involvement approach to evaluation aimed at learning and improvement by helping stakeholders to monitor and evaluate their own programs and initiatives. Involvement in and ownership of the evaluation contributes to credibility which in turn contributes to sustainability. An empowerment evaluator serves as a “critical friend” who facilitates the process, while the community retains control of the evaluation. EE is inexorably bound to the pursuit of social justice.
In this virtual workshop hosted by The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts (THFCM), Dr. David Fetterman will highlight how EE produces measurable outcomes with case examples ranging from high tech companies such as Google and Hewlett-Packard to work in rural Arkansas and squatter settlements in South Africa. The webinar will also introduce participants to the theory, concepts, principles, and steps of EE. In addition, Dr. Amie Shei, President & CEO of THFCM, will provide participants with a brief overview of how the Foundation uses EE to achieve results for its Synergy Initiative projects which have achieved many systems and policy changes over the past two decades.
