The Illinois Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (ILAFS) is soliciting applicants for our Diverse Voices scholarship as part of our dedication to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion. Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded to attend the annual meeting, being held Feb 27-29, 2023 in Bloomington, IL. Up to five of these scholarships will include a conference registration fee waiver and a $200 travel grant to offset conference travel and lodging fees. Up to five additional scholarships will be offered waiving the conference registration fee but without an additional travel grant.
The intended recipients of these scholarships are both students from groups historically underrepresented in fisheries (women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, people with disabilities, etc.), as well as students from universities and colleges without an ILAFS student sub-unit and not typically active within the state chapter (i.e., any Illinois college or university excluding Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale). Students must be currently enrolled in an Illinois college or university but do not need to be in a fisheries-specific program. Applicants from undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs are all welcome.
Criteria for selection will be based upon the applicant’s status as a member of an underrepresented group and/or university, financial need, and reason for attending the meeting. Students should use the attached application form to answer these questions and provide additional information to the selection committee.
Scholarship recipients are asked to attend the business meeting at the conference to receive their award.
All eligible students are urged to apply, regardless of whether they are presenting!
Applications due January 12, 2024!
