CWRU Music: Student Employment Application

Please complete this form if you are interested in working for the Department of Music. These positions require Federal Work Study during the academic year. Must be a full-time undergraduate student with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and good academic standing. Open to students from all academic disciplines. The starting wage for all positions is $11/hour with potential increases based on performance reviews and experience. Hours worked will be reported in HCM and approved weekly.

Music majors with current student staff positions often serve as student ambassadors/program advocates during undergraduate recruitment events and visits.

POSITIONS

Music Office Assistant

  • Supervisor: Jennifer Wright <jmh207@case.edu>
  • Description: Helps support department operations, undergraduate recruitment, academics, student services, special projects, open house events , Recital Class (attendance/programs/notes), room scheduling, concert programs, and general office tasks.
  • In-Office Hours: Mon/Tue/Wed 1-4 PM; Thu/Fri 9 AM-12 PM or 1-4 PM. Schedule may fluctuate depending on campus and department activities.

Who we're looking for: Energetic students with excellent work ethic and attention to detail. Individuals must enjoy working with the public, demonstrate excellent customer services skills, solve problems quickly and courteously, understand operations support, and possess strong organizational skills. Must interpret maps, office manuals, college publications, system reports, and draft/proof emails. Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel preferred. This position uses online resources such as Google Workspace and other tools, frequently works at a desk, and occasionally reaches, kneels, lifts, moves equipment, furniture, and office supplies. The successful candidate will uphold standards of confidentially set by university policies. This long-term position often lasts beyond two semesters with increasing responsibilities.

Marketing/Communications Assistant

  • Supervisor: Jennifer Wright <jmh207@case.edu>
  • Description: Assist with event descriptions, news stories, e-communications, social media content, etc. Aid in creating and distributing marketing and promotional materials across multiple platforms. Work hands on as event photographer during Department of Music events such as dress rehearsals, concerts, recitals, and other special events.
  • Hours: Flexible with the option of some remote work.

Who we're looking for: An organized multitasker who can manage posting schedules across several social media channels, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and possesses sharp writing skills. Individuals with excellent understanding for social media, familiarity with design and content creation tools, and passion for photography is a plus.

Music Operations/Events Team

  • Supervisor: Nicholas Strawn <nas158@case.edu>
  • Description: This position combines building monitor, ensemble staff, and events team. Assist with facilities operational activities, ensemble rehearsals, and concert preparation. Provide support services during performances and special events on campus. Follow/enforce policies, ensure smooth building operations, lock/unlock rehearsal rooms, conduct room checks, report maintenance issues, communicate daily, and assist with projects as needed. Specific assignments could include percussion representation (typically a percussion major) and staff lead (assistant to supervisor).
  • Hours: Flexible afternoon, evening, and weekends as scheduled. Each student must be available to work at least two 2-4 hour shifts per week, during the same shifts each week, with rotating Friday evenings. Live concerts and events will supplement the regularly weekly hours, up to an additional 4-8 hours per week during peak performance season. Hours vary depending on the calendar of events and staff availability.

Who we're looking for: Motivated students to assist with daily operations in Denison Hall (weekly rehearsal set-up/breakdown, music library management for ensembles, building security, etc.) and to support live events in Harkness Chapel (stage management, front/rear of house duties, guest experience, etc.). Team members must enjoy working with the public, demonstrate excellent customer service skills, and understand performance etiquette. This position requires leadership, responsibility, professionalism, dependability, and punctuality. Team members must remain on-site for the entire assignment, wear appropriate attire, have a welcoming presence, and attend mandatory training sessions.

AV Technician

  • Training provided by Graham Rosen, Audio Recording Engineer and Ken Wendt, IT Coordinator
  • Description: Provide audio recording and livestream services for ensemble concerts, student recitals, and recording sessions. Move equipment during events, demonstrate equipment to users, and complete post-production work. Coordinate weekly with supervisor for assigned work and provide updates on completed work. 
  • Hours: Flexible evening and weekends (cover events as needed). Events are typically more frequent toward the end of each semester (Fall: Oct-Dec/Spring: March-May). Time commitment per concert or recital is approximately 2-4 hours.

Who we're looking for: Reliable students eager to learn (knowledge of fundamental recording techniques is preferred, but not required). This position is responsible for setting up, installing, operating, testing, and troubleshooting audio microphones, speakers, projectors, monitors, recording equipment, and cables/wires. With guidance from the professional audio engineer, students will perform proper line checks, sound checks (volume settings, comping, mixing, and mastering), adjust levels as needed, note any faulty/broken equipment, organize equipment for the next service, and properly clean/store equipment. This position requires responsibility, professionalism, dependability, and punctuality. Individuals must work independently, keep an accurate schedule, arrive on time, meet deadlines, prioritize jobs, and interact with the general public, students, faculty, and other staff members.

Computer Lab Monitor

  • Supervisor: Ken Wendt <kxw295@case.edu>
  • Description: Monitor the computer lab (The Core) in Haydn Hall Rm 16, sign out personal recorders and other AV equipment to CWRU affiliates, check returned equipment for damage, notify supervisor of faulty/damaged lab equipment, clean computer monitors and accessories, and organize office supplies.
  • Hours: TBD by supervisor.

Who we're looking for: Responsible students with working knowledge of computers and printers. Individuals must enjoy working with the public and demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Solid Mac/Apple computer experience and fundamental troubleshooting skills required. Experience with digital audio technology (Logic Pro X, Ableton, mixers, microphones, interfaces), video technology and editing (DLSR cameras, camcorders, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe after effects), and web editing skills desired.
