Gangwon FC, ahead of final round, improve goal scoring ability
‘Hana One Q K League 1 2023’ now has only 5 games left in the final round.

With the relegation competition becoming more intense at the end of the season, Gangwon FC, led by coach Yoon Jeong-hwan, ended the regular round with 4 wins, 14 draws, 15 losses, and 26 points. They entered the final round in an uneasy 11th place, one point ahead of last place Suwon Samsung. As the final round continues with a series of matches against teams competing for relegation, each game is a '6-point game'. To that extent, victory becomes more powerful, and defeat becomes more fatal.

Gangwon FC's keyword in the final round is 'improved goal-making ability'. Gangwon has conceded the fewest goals (38) among the six teams in Final B, but is also the team with the fewest goals (25). If they maintain their current ranking, it is most important not to lose as they can avoid direct relegation, but as the point gap with Suwon Samsung is small, they desperately need three points to secure a stable ranking.

In order to win, you must eventually score. Gangwon's Vitor Gabriel, who was brought in in the summer transfer market, is showing good performance up front, and Kim Dae-won is also showing signs of recovery, showing better attack power than in the first half of the season. In fact, in the 15 games since Coach Yoon Jeong-hwan took office, Gangwon's expected points per 90 minutes is 1.07, ranking 4th in the league.

But decision-making power is holding you back. During the same period, Gangwon's actual score was only 14 goals, and the actual score compared to expected score was 0.78, ranking 10th in the league. Since they conceded fewer goals, it is highly likely that Gangwon's ranking would have been higher than it is now if they had scored as many goals as expected.

Given that Gangwon showed weakness to Final B teams this season, improvement in decision-making is even more urgent. Among the Final B teams this season, Gangwon only recorded 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss against FC Seoul, and did not achieve a single win against the other four teams. In particular, it is fatal to be pushed back by 10th place Suwon FC and Suwon Samsung, which are relegation contenders, with 1 draw and 2 losses. If they lose to them in the final round, direct relegation is inevitable.

After finishing the 32nd round match against Daejeon Hana Citizen (1-1 draw), Coach Yoon Jeong-hwan pointed out the players' goal-making ability, saying, "The players need concentration to be able to score when the opportunity arises." In the final round, it appears that they will have more opportunities to score as they face relatively weaker teams. Whether this opportunity can be utilized is expected to determine Gangwon's performance this season.
