Guardian ad litems (or "GALs" for short) are attorneys appointed by the Court to represent your child or children's best interests. The Court wants to be sure that it has the most information possible before making a big decision for your family, so the GAL is asked to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. At each hearing, the GAL will make recommendations to the Court about what she feels are in the child's best interests and the Court will consider those recommendations seriously. GALs are completely independent from anyone else in the case and only represent the child's best interests. This means that they are NOT your attorney and cannot give you legal advice.
