MozEM Prospective Volunteer Information Form
Thank you so much for volunteering to work with us. The MozEM project is a unique partnership between a US nonprofit, PLeDGE Health, and the Mozambican Ministry of Health. In the four years since the collaboration began, we have successfully petitioned for EM to be recognized as a specialty, have started Mozambique's first EM residency, and through our small (small!) operating budget, we have been able to send our residents for training and to attend conferences in other countries in this region.

We are looking for volunteer physicians to serve in the following capacities:
1) Give distance-lectures to our Mozambican residents on our conference day (Wednesdays); this can be one-time or ongoing
2) Come to Mozambique to serve as a clinical, bedside educator (we will have this need starting in December 2020 and ongoing after that)
3) Be willing to be pre-vetted to potentially come to Mozambique on short notice in the event of an emergency situation that requires outside volunteers (eg, a repeat of the terrible cyclones of 2019)

Mozambique's official language is Portuguese, though our EM residents have worked hard to get to the place where they are able to work and learn in English.

Applicant Name
In what capacity are you willing to volunteer?
Institutional Affiliation
Applicant professional title
How did you learn about the Mozambican EM residency program and our volunteer application?
What prompted you to apply to volunteer with us?
How long are you available to volunteer? During what time period?
Please list any languages you speak, and your level of proficiency in each:
Have you had prior experiences working in a medical setting with poor access to resources, and/or serving a community who culture was very different from yours? What was this experience, and what do you feel you gained and offered in this experience?
What do you hope to gain from your time in Mozambique?
What do you hope to share during your time with us?
In addition to supervising clinical care, we will ask volunteers to organize teaching sessions, including lectures, sim-type cases, and oral case discussions. Do you have particular areas of medicine that you like to teach about, or styles of teaching that you are quite passionate about?
What material support will you require if you come to work with us? Please be aware we operate on a shoestring budget and have no paid staff at this time (Mozambican physicians are paid by the government).
For residents, we require a letter of recommendation (attendings also may submit a letter or recommendation). The letter should be written by someone who has worked with you in a professional capacity, and should be able to speak to your ability to adapt to new environments, or work with diverse populations. We will provide you with contact information for sending letters of recommendation after this application is reviewed.

Please be aware that medical care in Mozambique is not up to US standards, and in the case of an emergent or severe medical condition, evacuation would be necessary. All volunteers must provide this proof no less than 60 days prior to arrival in Mozambique.
