DESCRIPTION:
The course will take place in Whakapapa and be contracted to Hillary Outdoors.
Leave Friday night.
Saturday: day avalanche course (see overview below)
Sunday: free time on the mountain (e.g. practice self-arrest in your own time, go skiing). Drive back to Wellington on Sunday afternoon.
Stay at the WTMC lodge for two nights.
INCLUDED: Avalanche day course ($280pp), transport and two nights at the lodge (incl breakfast, lunch and dinner) + alpine equipment if needed (ice axe, crampons, helmet, transceiver, shovel, probe)
NOT INCLUDED: lift day pass. If you do not already have a season/life pass for Mt Ruapehu you may be required to buy a lift day pass (cost $84). Please don't buy this yet as it may depend on weather and snow conditions. The instructor will confirm whether or not you need one closer to the time.

https://www.hillaryoutdoors.co.nz/programmes/avalanche-awareness/The course is an introductory level course that is the first step to gaining an understanding of the avalanche phenomenon, using a system to make good decisions about personal safety when travelling in avalanche terrain and what to do if someone is caught in an avalanche.
On completion, the participant will be able to:
· Identify the core principles of pre-trip planning including where to find information and how to use it when planning a trip
· Identify avalanche terrain and avalanche types
· Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of risk management and route decision-making through awareness of avalanche hazards including snowpack and weather conditions, terrain factors and human factors.
· Participate in a companion rescue

NOTE: This course is open to members of other tramping clubs. Priority will be given to WTMC members if there is more interest than places available.
