2023 JB Fall Research Pre-Survey
Our goal with the materials we share is to increase community knowledge and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) as a strategy for managing invasive Japanese beetles (JB). Beneficial insects such as pollinators are being harmed by pesticide misuse which can be reduced with IPM implementation. This survey has 20 questions and will assist us in quantifying your current knowledge of IPM and JB management. You will likely not be familiar with the terms or subjects that are being questioned, but please still answer each question to the best of your ability. There will be a post-survey after this project is concluded.

Q1. Integrated pest management is: *
Q2. Who can create IPM plans? *
Q3. What is the first step in an IPM plan? *
Q4. When you must use an insecticide, which category should you pick from first? *
Q5. How do you identify Japanese beetle grubs? *
Q6. Small numbers of Japanese beetle adults are feeding on the foliage of your flowering ornamentals. How do you manage them? *
Q7. Japanese beetle grubs in the soil should only be managed with organic treatments.
*
Q8. Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have properly identified the pest as Popilliae japonica (Japanese Beetle) based upon its physical appearance and have evaluated the extent of the damage they have caused.
*
Q9.  Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have kept track of what pest species have appeared and when, how many are present, and have kept records of what methods/treatments I have used to manage them.
*
Q10.  Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I tend to avoid planting species that are preferred by pests I repeatedly encounter and adapt my management plans (watering, mowing, fertilizing) to disrupt pest establishment.
*
Q11.  Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have set up traps and have removed JB grubs/adults by hand.
*
Q12.  Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have created a biodiverse environment that welcomes naturally occurring insect predators, parasitoids, and pathogens to control pest populations.
*
Q13.  Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have utilized pesticides with relatively low-toxicity and minimal non-target effects to kill only Japanese beetles and not beneficial insects or vertebrates.
*
Q14. Name the IPM control method/tactic that the following action falls under:

I have applied conventional broad-spectrum chemical pesticides to control pest populations.
*
Q15. Your rose bush has some leaf damage. What do you do?
*
Q16. Why are systemic neonicotinoid insecticides bad for specifically bees and butterflies?
*
Q17. What does systemic mean when describing pesticides/insecticides?
*
Q18. The EPA registers conventional and biorational insecticides. Which following statement is correct?
*
Q19. Japanese beetles can be successfully managed by what biocontrol organism?
*
