Clearwater Youth Empowerment Program Application
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater invites you to be a part of a unique experience this summer onboard the tall ship Clearwater. A replica of a 19th century Hudson River sailboat, the Clearwater acts as a floating environmental classroom and seeks to inspire lifelong love for the natural world and stewardship for the Hudson River. This year, we are offering three Youth Empowerment Programs: Young Women at the Helm, Young Men at the Helm and LGBTQ+ Youth at the Helm ("Queerwater"). These programs specifically seek to engage young people from throughout the Hudson Valley, from small towns to big cities, in discovering and developing new talents and abilities in an amazing, unconventional, unforgettable (and FREE!) experience!

When and Where?

Queerwater: July 19th--July 21st, pick up and drop off at Dyckman, camping in Alpine.

Young Women at the Helm: August 2nd--August 4th, pick up and drop off in Poughkeepsie, Camping in Cold Spring and Beacon.

Young Men at the Helm: August 16th--August 18th pick up and drop off in Poughkeepsie, camping in Cold Spring and Beacon.

What are we doing?
We will be involved in a wide range of activities as individuals and in groups, lead by our crew, Onboard Program Coordinators and Captain. Activities include sail raising, fishing with a trawl net, testing and examining water quality, steering and navigating the river aboard the sloop, learning sailors’ arts, games, and relaxing on the river. Several guest speakers may be talking about community leadership, “green” careers, and the limitless opportunities open to young people today.

Who?
This program is open to 14-18 year olds.
Young Women at the Helm is specifically for female identifying students, Young Men at the Helm for male identifying students, and Queerwater for LGBTQ+ identifying students. If you are interested in sailing, environmental science, or just making new friends in a unique environment, this experience is for YOU!

Will we spend the night on the boat?
No. We will be on the boat from about 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. each day. The nights will be spent on land at campsites in tents. Please note, tent groups will be assigned; if participants have applied with a friend, they will not necessarily be grouped together. Clearwater staff will spend the night with participants at the campsites, supervising and coordinating activities. On the third day participants will depart the boat at about 4 pm.

How much does it cost?
There is no cost to participants! All expenses are covered - please don’t let the cost of transit deter you from applying!

Is prior experience necessary?

No! We will teach you all you need to know.

Participants must be vaccinated for COVID-19 (including at least one booster).
