Doors open: 1.45pm 

You will need to purchase a ticket from HERE to attend any of the playing sessions (reserving your seat for the final concert)

1.45pm Doors Open - Registration/ Open Mic Quartets/ Trade Stands

2.15pm Opening Event - RCS Horns/ Massed Warm-Up and Breathing Workshop

2.45pm Horns Go Hunting * – using hand horn technique in a massed blow for all ages with Beccy Goldberg/ Improvisation Workshop with Fergus Kerr/ ‘Come and Play’ (Beginners - Grade 4)/ Directed Ensembles

3.45pm Historical Horn Masterclass with Anneke Scott (60 mins)/ Vienna Horns and Playing in Europe with Lauren Reeve-Rawlings and Peter McNeill/ Horn Maintenance session/ directed ensembles 

4.45pm Ensemble Masterclass with the Rookh Quartet for horn ensembles or mixed chamber groups (60 mins)/ directed ensembles/  Pedagogy Session – share teaching and learning tips

5.45pm Massed Blow for all participants in Stevenson Hall with RCS Head of Brass John Logan 

6pm Final Concert – Anneke Scott/ Rookh Quartet/ Massed Blow and the Scottish Horn Sound (players from Scotland’s professional orchestras)

NB all events are 45 mins with the exception of the masterclasses (60 mins)

All open mic slots will take place between events in the café area

  • Anneke Scott (sponsored by BHS) – an opportunity to play to Anneke in this session (NB you can also pop into this session to watch and learn more about playing the natural horn and period instruments)
  • Ensemble Masterclass with the Rookh Quartet - explore ensemble tips and tricks with Scotland’s professional horn quartet looking at rehearsal techniques, blending sounds, phrasing and intonation
  • Open Mic Sessions - maybe you fancy playing in a more informal setting? If so, this could be for you! Sign up for a slot to play with your own group - these will run in the cafe area throughout the day!

To join on the day

  • Directed ensembles -  led by our experienced tutors and horn players with repertoire suitable for your age and range 
  • Horns Go Hunting – join a short massed-blow session and explore some basic hand horn technique for yourself, prior to seeing Anneke Scott in action. NOTE: this session will require the use of the F-side of your horn (or your F crook)
  • Improvisation session with Fergus Kerr – how to have fun without being tied to the music on the stand! 
  • Horn maintenance session – the basics we all need to know!
  • Pedagogy sessions - Vienna horns, teaching methodology and much more 
  • All masterclasses sessions are open to watch 

Trade Stands

  • Music Swap Shop - bring your unwanted copies of music and swap it for something else!
  • Cafe - open all day!
  • RCS desk - find about the opportunities with the RCS, RCS Juniors and Short Courses
  • BHS desk – chat to us and join up on the day

MASTERCLASS: I would like to play in a period instrument masterclass with Anneke Scott.

NB the deadline for application is January 14th, and players will be selected by Anneke to reflect a range of repertoire, styles and experience levels. 

MASTERCLASS: I would like to participate with my chamber group/ horn ensemble in a masterclass with the Rookh Quartet.
