Title: Vaping Among Youth: Understanding Risk and Protection among a Vulnerable Population
Speaker: Dr. Elisa Trucco (Associate Professor of Psychology, Florida International University/Co-PI, NIH FIU-RCMI ACE Project)
Abstract: Adolescent electronic cigarette use or vaping remains a public health concern. In 2020, 36% of U.S. high school students reported lifetime e-cigarette use and 21% reported past month use (Johnston et al., 2021). Given the growing popularity of e-cigarettes among adolescents, youth vaping has been declared an epidemic (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2018). Yet, factors contributing to vaping initiation among adolescents remain unclear. This presentation will provide an overview of e-cigarettes and factors related to their popularity among youth. Empirical findings from the ACE Project that examines etiological processes involved in e-cigarette use onset will also be discussed.
