#3595 Reflective Practice (For NEXUS Partner Districts Only)
This year, in response to the pandemic-induced upheavals and changes in program structures, ROE #47 administration and our Mental Health Consultant are implementing Reflective Practice Groups.  These Reflective Practice Groups are considered Best Practice as part of the Illinois Model of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation. They will be available to area educators within a Prek-12 Nexus Partnering District.  Our goal is to increase staff confidence and competence, build reflective capacity (our understanding of how our knowledge and biases can enhance or detract from our ability to meet the needs of the students and families we serve), and strengthen program quality. Reflection on the practitioner’s part includes and supports awareness of the parallel process: what happens in one relationship will be mirrored in all others. The parallel process describes the interlocking network of relationships among supervisors, supervisees, families, and children.  It is within these parallel relationships that learning and change can take place.  A deep understanding of the parallel process increases the practitioner’s ability to respond to the family with empathy, attunement, and support. By practicing reflection, we may be better prepared to assist families in slowing down, taking the time to identify and fully understand their challenges, assess the effectiveness of their approaches, and consider other possible meanings or responses to behavior.  Being individually reflective includes recognizing that we are the primary “tool” in the work that we do with families.  Further “sharpening” of the tool consists of developing an increased awareness of our reactions, feelings, and motivations and taking time to examine how these reactions, feelings, and motivations influence our behavior and work with families.
