Student Leader Endorsement: Student SNAP Expansion
There is a crisis on college campuses around the nation, and we need your leadership to help solve it.
By filling out this form, you are showing your support for the following statement:
Around 40% of undergraduates who start college do not finish, often due to financial pressures. One of the biggest expenses for college students is food, with 39% of undergraduates experiencing food insecurity. When students do not have reliable access to sufficient quantities of food, they can be forced to choose between eating dinner and graduating from college.
The undersigned leaders understand this problem and what it will take to address student food insecurity.
SNAP has the power to keep students enrolled. During the pandemic, the federal government expanded the eligibility requirements for SNAP to automatically include all students whose family expected contribution on FAFSA is zero and students eligible for state or federal work studies, as long as they also meet the income requirements. More than 3 million additional students are currently eligible to receive SNAP benefits under the temporary expansion. However, the expansion is set to expire 30 days after the conclusion of the pandemic. This will cause the vast majority of these students to lose their benefits and will put their education at risk.
We are urging Congress to pass legislation to make these eligibility criteria for SNAP benefits permanent for college students. It is time to ensure all students have access to safe and nutritious food regardless of their financial circumstances.
