Please nominate any school staff member whose work has helped your neurodivergent student to feel included, understood, connected, or valued.

No action is too small! This information can be so helpful in inspiring and educating others about effective practices.

Ex: Ms. X noticed that my son would often get off task during independent reading time, and he kept saying that he hates reading. She got curious about the WHY behind his behavior and figured out that, though his reading skills were age-appropriate, he was getting overwhelmed by the number of words per page in traditional chapter books and shutting down- apparently this is common with ADHD. She experimented with pulling some graphic novels for him, and he's now hooked on and eagerly tearing through graphic novels series. Beyond the learning benefits he's getting from all the extra reading he's voluntarily doing, Ms. X made my son feel seen and cared about, and that's meant the world to us.

Ex: Mr. Y gets to know his students as whole people and tunes into their emotional experiences at school. He noticed that my daughter can become anxious more easily than many kids. Things like finding a place to sit at lunch, or unexpectedly having a substitute teacher were really stressful to her. He took the time to talk 1:1 with her to understand her worries and see how he could offer support. Now she has a lunch buddy who she knows she'll sit with, and, when possible, we get a quick text or email heads-up about subs, so she's not caught off guard. Most importantly though, she feels understood by him and safe confiding in him. This puts her at ease and gives her the mental space to enjoy school so much more.
